Application Process

Before you fill out an application, you need to decide which of the three training pathways you should take.  Go to the Training tab to learn more about the different training options.

  1. Gospel Counselor Certification–If you want to pursue certification, then fill out the full application.
  2. Gospel Counseling Curriculum Training only–If you are involved in another ministry area and only want to pursue the counseling curriculum training, then fill out the short application.
  3. Personal Growth--If you only want to work through the Porterbrook material for personal growth, you do not have to fill out any application.

Who Can Apply?

You must be a Sojourn member to apply.  We ask you prayerfully review and reflect on the qualifications of a deacon found in 1 Timothy 3:8-13 since those who successfully complete the training and testing period for the various levels of ministry can be recognized and serve as deacons within Sojourn Counseling.

What is the Application Process for Certification?

The application process for certification is made up of the following steps: (1) complete the application packet (2) complete an interview with a Sojourn elder or ministry leader in Sojourn Care and Counseling, (3) pass a background check, after successful completion of the first two steps, and (4) receive final approval by an elder in Sojourn Counseling. You will need to read and reflect on the Sojourn Counseling Position Paper - A Vision for Gospel Counseling by the Church - in order to complete your application.

Will Everyone Be Approved?

Unfortunately no. There are several reasons why someone may not be approved to serve in Sojourn Counseling: (1) Ministry Fit-based on expressed desires and experience, you might be better placed in another ministry area; (2) Personal Recommendation-based on expressed concerns; (3) Interview-based on where you are at on God’s redemptive journey, the time may not be right to serve in a ministry focused on helping others; (4) “FAITH”-in someway, found not to be faithful in previous work or ministry positions, not available for the time demands for the counseling ministry, not intentional in living out the gospel, not teachable, and/or humble or honest about one’s own sinfulness; and/or (5) Background Check-based on a significant “red flag” identified in the background check.
